The Fred B. Cranford Amphitheater has gone quiet for the year. So where does Valdese go on a Saturday night between now and New Year's? For the next three months the answer is mostly one address, 400 Main Street West, and the building has its own set of rules. Concert seating is general admission for everyone except season-ticket holders. The box office keeps weekday hours. Ticket sales are final. And the bluegrass series skips December entirely. If you know those four things before October 10, the fall is easy to plan.
Why the season lives under one roof this year
Old Colony Players performs its flagship drama, "From This Day Forward," in the amphitheater every summer. The venue was built in 1968. OCP is now raising $500,000 to repair it before the drama's 60th production. The list covers new light towers at $75,000, the turntable stage at $25,000 and electrical wiring at $50,000. OCP leadership calls a $100,000 waterproof canopy a "dream project" because it would stop rainouts. Morrissa Angi, Valdese's Director of Community Affairs & Tourism, said $175,000 had been raised. The campaign closes January 15, 2027. Donations can be made at oldcolonyplayers.com.
So the town's cool-weather programming lands in the Old Rock School. The building holds nine organizations, businesses and nonprofits, including the Community Affairs office and the visitor center. It also has a renovated 478-seat auditorium, two public art galleries that open during events, and the 150-seat Waldensian Room. The building is busy enough that during the May 2026 budget debate, a proposal came up to move Town Hall staff into it. Angi said the two available rooms are used for events and the move would compromise operations.
A busy building with one auditorium means the fall calendar stacks up. The bluegrass series shows that most clearly.
The $215 question for Bluegrass at the Rock
The 2026–2027 Bluegrass at the Rock season has eight shows, running October through May. Every show starts at 7:30 p.m., with doors at 6:30 p.m.
| Date | Artist | Presale | Door |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct. 10, 2026 | Authentic Unlimited | $33 | $35 |
| Nov. 7, 2026 | Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out | $36 | $40 |
| Jan. 16, 2027 | Darin & Brooke Aldridge | $30 | $35 |
| Feb. 6, 2027 | Lonesome River Band | $30 | $35 |
| Feb. 20, 2027 | Unspoken Tradition | $28 | $33 |
| Mar. 6, 2027 | The Burnett Sisters | $28 | $33 |
| Apr. 10, 2027 | Balsam Range | $40 | $45 |
| May 15, 2027 | Seth Mulder & Midnight Run | $30 | $35 |
| Total | $255 | $291 |
A season ticket costs $215 for all eight shows. That's $40 less than buying every show at presale and $76 less than paying at the door each time. It works out to about $27 a show, cheaper than every presale price on the list, including the two $28 winter dates.
The seat matters as much as the price. Every concert is general admission unless you hold a season ticket. Season holders pick a reserved seat and keep it for the whole season. You buy the season ticket online through Square, then call 828-879-2129 to choose your seat. The seating chart splits the auditorium into right and left balconies and center, right and left orchestra sections.
Some fine print can trip people up:
- All ticket sales are final.
- The box office is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closes daily from noon to 1 p.m. Both fall concerts are on Saturdays. If you have a question, call during the week.
- Veterans with valid ID and children under 12 get $2 off, but only by phone, and neither discount applies to season tickets.
- The accessible entrance and elevator are on the side of the building.
If you only want the two fall shows, presale for both costs $69. The season ticket pays off if you expect to go to most of the winter and spring dates too, and it's the only way to guarantee where you sit.
October runs on two stages at once
Authentic Unlimited opens the season on Saturday, October 10. Twelve days later the same auditorium belongs to Old Colony Players. Disney's "Descendants the Musical" plays October 22, 23 and 24 at 7:30 p.m., with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Sunday, October 25. Theater seating is general admission. Tickets are $20 for adults, $17 for seniors over 60, $14 for students 18 and younger or with a student ID, and $12 each for groups of 12 or more. Groups of 10 or more can call 828-522-1150 about special pricing. OCP sells tickets online through Arts People, linked from its productions page.
The quieter side of the building runs on weekdays. The Rock School Arts Foundation's galleries are showing Carol Turner in Gallery I, Kimberly Bost in the Hallway Gallery and Preeti Happer in Gallery II. The foundation lists weekday hours, with weekend visits by appointment. On Thursdays, Open Art Studio invites two-dimensional artists to paint or draw together in Studio 101. The Visit Valdese calendar lists it at noon through October and at 11 a.m. in November and December. If you're planning a first visit, check the time for that week.
October ends outside. Treats in the Streets is on the town calendar for Friday, October 30, at 4 p.m. in downtown Valdese.
November 13 and 14 fill the whole building
Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out plays November 7. It's the last bluegrass show of 2026 and the most expensive one this fall, at $36 presale and $40 at the door.
The following weekend, two events run in different parts of the building at nearly the same hours:
- Christmas in November Craft & Gift Show. More than 80 crafters. Admission is $2, or free with a canned-food donation. Hours are 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, November 13, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 14.
- Piedmont & Western Railroad Museum open houses. Friday, November 13, at 4 p.m. and Saturday, November 14, at 9 a.m.
The museum is on the building's lower level. It houses an HO-scale model of a fictional railroad running from Marion, North Carolina, to Leadvale, Tennessee, on more than 1,000 feet of track. Admission is free, and donations are welcome. Since the two events start within minutes of each other, one trip covers both. That makes the craft show an easy outing for families with a child who would rather watch trains than browse booths. You don't have to wait for that weekend, either. The club opens its doors most Thursday nights, except the first Thursday of the month, which is a business meeting, and on third-Saturday workdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
December, when the bluegrass stage goes quiet
The concert list goes straight from November 7 to January 16, when Darin & Brooke Aldridge restart the series. There's no December show. Holiday programming fills the gap.
Old Colony Players returns with "The Holiday Channel Christmas Movie Wonderthon," December 10, 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m., plus a 2:30 p.m. matinee on December 13. Prices match "Descendants": $20 for adults, $17 for seniors, $14 for students and $12 per person for groups.
Saturday, December 12, is the fullest day on the fall calendar. Mingle with Kringle runs breakfast, craft and Santa sessions at 8:30, 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. Tickets are $4 per person, and reservations are by phone at 828-879-2129. That night, Wonderthon takes the auditorium at 7:30. A family could spend the morning with Santa and come back that evening for the show. Kringle requires a phone reservation, and Wonderthon tickets are sold online, so arrange both ahead of time.
The calls to make this month
Most of the fall comes down to a handful of weekday calls and clicks:
- Decide on a bluegrass season ticket before October 10, and if you buy one, call 828-879-2129 to pick your seat.
- Buy "Descendants" tickets through Old Colony Players' Arts People link. If you're organizing a group of 10 or more, call 828-522-1150.
- Put November 13 and 14 on the calendar and set aside a canned-food donation for free craft-show admission.
- Call 828-879-2129 to reserve a Mingle with Kringle session at 8:30, 9:30 or 10:30 a.m.
The visitor center inside the building is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closes from noon to 1 p.m.
I've worked in Burke County for more than 35 years, and a lot of my clients tell me it's calendars like this one that keep them here. If you're thinking about a move within the county, or just want to know how your home fits into today's market, I'm glad to talk it through. Tim Newton and Coldwell Banker Newton Real Estate are in downtown Morganton, just down U.S. 70 from the Old Rock School. Let's Connect.
